The Neighborhood Of Nations

The Columbia City neighborhood has been called by some as a “neighborhood of nations” due to the fact that it is one of the most diverse areas in Seattle. Columbia City was once a mill and railroad town and continues to have the small town “vibe.” All walks of life from many different nationalities live here. The neighborhood is also Seattle’s most “walkable neighborhood” according to The website has given the area a high score of 99 (out of 100). The area also has a perfect score for transit options, however, their score for biking is a bit lower weighing in with a score of 66, which is still pretty good for the city.

The Link Light Rail station connects the town with SeaTac Airport and Downtown Seattle for ultimate shopping and ease for travel. Located about one block away from the Columbia City Link Rail Station sits one of Seattle’s largest farmer’s markets which is in operation from May to October. Music lovers will also appreciate the neighborhood’s Beat Walk which offers a series of music performances within the Historic District.

Families will love the city’s sixth largest park, Jefferson Park, which offers fantastic views of the Duwamish River, Downtown Seattle and the Olympic Mountains. The park features an all-new playground, the Beacon Mountain Spray Park, a skate park, lawn bowling, the Jefferson Community Center and the Jefferson Park Golf Course located at 3801 Beacon Ave. S. Genesee Park, located at 4316 S Genesee St, Seattle, WA 98118 offers large open grassy areas, play fields and playground equipment. Dog owners love the off-leash dog park. Then, there is Seward Park (5898 Lake Washington Blvd. S.,) that features a 2.4-mile long paved loop that winds around eagle nests, a native plant garden and miles of hiking trails in the woods or along the shoreline.

Also in the town, you’ll find the Northwest African American Museum ( located at 2300 S. Massachusetts Street, 98144. NAAM’s mission is to spread knowledge and understanding of the histories, arts and cultures of people of African descent. The museum isn’t only for African Americans to enjoy as many will find the connections between the Pacific Northwest and those of African descent to be a fascinating experience. Here guests are able to investigate and celebrate various experiences of people of color in America through exhibitions, programs and events. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Some of the restaurant worth noting include Geraldine’s Counter and Super Six. Geraldine’s is not a large restaurant, but is home to “Seattle’s Best French Toast and comfort food staples like meatloaf, buttermilk friend chicken and meat loaf. Super Six is a Hawaiian-themed restaurant housed in a former auto body shop and specializes in Hawaiian fare like short ribs, chicken wings, burgers and their own “aloha fries.” For dessert and a short walk down nostalgia lane, check out the Full Tilt ice cream parlor (5041 Rainier Ave. S.‎, Seattle, WA 98118) which features a collection of pinball machines and quality ice cream flavors including gluten free.
