It is fitting that Seattle, aka “The Emerald City,” should have some of best events for diehard fans of St. Patrick’s Day. Believe it or not, the day is more than a celebration of green beer.  Here’s a just a few ways to celebrate the day this year.

47th Annual Irish Week Proclamation Luncheon
The Ninety, 408 Occidental Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98104 - (206) 361-1713

Who knew that for 47 years this has been a thing? Probably your grandparents. Held on Friday, March 16th at The Ninety restaurant, the Irish Week Proclamation Luncheon will feature proclamations being issued by Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and King County Executive Dow Constantine. Also enjoying the salmon meal will be the St. Patrick's Day Parade Grand Marshal and Honorary Grand Marshal, along with other distinguished visitors from Ireland and locally. Irish music and dancing begins at 11:30 A.M. Tickets are $30.

St. Patrick Comes to Town with Pirates

Just as the real St. Patrick was kidnapped by Irish Pirates in 400 A.D., Seattle’s own Pirates of the Emerald Isle will deliver the saint once again on Friday, March 16th on the shores of South Lake Union nearby the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI). However, you can catch a ride there by meeting at The Ninety restaurant (see above) at 5:00 p.m. Then, ride back for the annual Green Strip Laying event

F5 St. Patrick’s Day Dash
Seattle Center, 305 Harrison St., Seattle, WA 98109 - (206) 464-0826

Known as Seattle’s largest single-distance run, walk, jog or even crawl event, the St. Patrick’s Day helps to benefit the Detlef Schrempf Foundation and there is something for anyone willing to move for the cause. Kids age 10 and under can participate in the 1K Leprechaun Lap and adults can go for the 5K run. And by all means, wear the green as prizes will be given to those with the best costumes. Afterward, you can celebrate your achievement in the (probably green) beer garden. Entry fees vary depending on the type of t-shirt or pullover you’d like to run home with. The dash happens on Saturday, March 17th and packet pick up begins at 6:30 a.m.

Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade
King County Administration Building, 500 5th Ave., Seattle, WA  98104

Marching along the newly green striped path, the parade’s festivities begin on Saturday, March 17th at 12:20 p.m. for the Irish Flag Raising at the King County Administration Building where both Irish and the U.S. National Anthems will be played. Then the parade will proceed from Jefferson up 4th Avenue to Westlake Park. Participants are invited to ride the Monorail for free to the Seattle Center Armory for the closing ceremonies and Irish Festival (see below). Seniors are invited to be a part of the parade by riding “The Duck” for free. Just be at the King County Administration Building by noon.
