While mom would never turn away a bouquet of flowers or a new trinket, but maybe what she really wants is to spend some time with her kids experiencing art or a show or a race or maybe a great meal literally on the water. Various artists in Kirkland open their doors two days a year on Mother’s Day weekend. On May 12-13, 2018 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., take mom on a tour of artist’s studios to see them in action and peruse their crafts. Artwork on display includes jewelry, glass art, painting, photography, garden art, sculptures, furniture, fiber arts and more. Stop by the Kirkland Arts Center to grab a bit to eat and pick up a tour map. Admission is free.
Mothers will be honored and teased at Unexpected Productions’ annual Mother’s Day show where mom can get in for just $5! “You can win back her affection pretty cheaply” says the website that offers “off-the-cuff” comedy as this crew tackles and joys and horrors of motherhood. There is so much to do down by the Seattle Waterfront from dining over Elliott Bay, visiting the Aquarium, riding the Great Wheel, visiting the various shops, etc. To help make mom’s day special (and help you save some cash) the city is offering free parking on May 13, 2018 from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. In order to take advantage of the offer, you’ll need to park at one of the participating parking lots, visit a participating waterfront business and then request a free parking voucher to use on your way out of the garage. If mom likes to run and loves colors, this is the event for her. Known by some as the “Happiest 5K on the Planet,” the color run features a color runner kit, “epic” course elements and a “super-charged” finish. Everyone who runs gets a white T-shirt to wear while on the race that will become back with a blast of colors. The event begins on Saturday, May 12th with a check-in party from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. with the race beginning in waves starting at 8:30 a.m. Mother’s Day morning. The start line comes with its one pre-race party with music, dancing, warmup stretching and even a few giveaways.
Celebrate mom with a rose a view from the Waterways yacht. Brunch cruises will depart on Sunday, May 13 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The two-hour cruise comes with a cruise on Lake Union and Lake Washington, champagne or sparkling cider toast upon boarding, a Captain’s rose for mom, a private table, an extensive buffet of Pacific Northwest brunch favorites, coffee and tea. The Virginia Mason Half Marathon and 5K races will be held on Sunday, May 13th where everyone who participates in either run receives a medal. The Half-Marathon will start at Northwest University (5520 108th Ave. in Kirkland) and the 5K will begin at Juanita Beach Park (9703 NE Juanita Dr., Kirkland). Registration for the half marathon is $70 if you order by May 12 or $80 on the day of the race. Registration for the 5K is $45 if you register before May 12 or $50 on the day of the race. Youth age 16 and under will receive a $10 discount.
